On a skincare product page I worked on, the most-clicked element was not the add-to-cart button. It was a before/after slider. The clickmap showed people clicking through every single slide, and that one map ended an argument with a designer who did not want an arrows carousel.
Any free heatmap tool would have shown that. Which is the honest answer to most "Clarity or Hotjar" questions: the question you bring matters more than the tool you install.
There is also a newer reason this comparison has changed. If you type hotjar.com into your browser today, you land on Contentsquare. In its own words: "It's no longer possible to create a new account on Hotjar." (Contentsquare, 2026). So for a store choosing now, the real choice is Microsoft Clarity or Contentsquare, Hotjar's successor.
No affiliate links, no sponsorship. I co-founded Skuology and Upsellr. Neither is an analytics tool, and none of the tools in this post pays me.
This is written for Shopify store operators, not SaaS product teams, so every row below is judged on Shopify criteria. For where heatmaps and recordings fit into your research as a whole, start with the guide to heatmaps and session recordings on Shopify.
Key Takeaways
- Install Clarity first. It is free, installs through Microsoft's own Shopify app, and keeps heatmap data for nine months.
- Hotjar now means Contentsquare for anyone signing up. Existing Hotjar users keep their login.
- Pay for Contentsquare when you need on-site surveys next to recordings, or replay history longer than 30 days.
- Neither tool sees a standard Shopify checkout the way it sees your product pages. Plan around that.
- Heatmaps need traffic and a question. Without both, the colours are noise.
The short verdict
For most Shopify stores doing $500k to $5M a year, install Microsoft Clarity first. It covers heatmaps and recordings at no cost, and its limits only bite in specific situations.
Pay for Contentsquare (Hotjar's successor) when one of three things is true. You need to ask visitors why, not only watch what they do. You need recordings older than 30 days. Or you are on Shopify Plus and its checkout coverage holds up on your own store.
Already on Hotjar? Your login still works, so nothing forces a move today. Stay if you use its surveys. Move to Clarity at renewal if you only watch recordings and heatmaps.
Microsoft Clarity vs Hotjar, side by side
Microsoft's own comparison page ranks first for this search. Treat its claims as vendor claims, and the same goes for Contentsquare's. Every row below comes from the vendor's own documentation or Shopify App Store listing, checked in October 2026.
| Microsoft Clarity | Hotjar (now Contentsquare) | |
|---|---|---|
| Heatmaps | Click, scroll and conversion maps. Up to 100,000 page views per heatmap | Heatmaps on every plan. Zone-based heatmaps from the Growth plan up |
| Session recordings | Yes. Up to 100,000 sessions per project per day | Session replay on every plan |
| Surveys and feedback | Not in Microsoft's feature list (recordings, heatmaps, insights) | Yes. On contentsquare.com, the free plan includes 100 survey responses and 5 user interviews a month |
| Shopify install path | Microsoft's own app, Microsoft Clarity: AI Insights. No theme edits | Contentsquare's own app, Contentsquare Analytics. The "Hotjar Install" app is a third-party installer that needs an existing Hotjar account |
| Consent handling | Enforces consent signals for the EEA, UK and Switzerland. Reads Shopify's cookie banner | Web tag uses an opt-out command. How the Shopify app reads Shopify's banner, I could not verify |
| Checkout visibility | Checkout and post-checkout tracked through Shopify's pixel on Plus. Checkout abandonment report is Plus only | App listing claims replays and heatmaps on checkout pages. Plan conditions not verified |
| Sampling and caps | Claims no sampling and no traffic limits, next to the 100,000-a-day recording cap | Free plan up to 200k sessions a month on contentsquare.com, but the Shopify app listing caps Free at 20k. Paid tiers sized by monthly sessions |
| Retention | Recordings 30 days. Heatmap and click data 9 months. Favourited sessions 9 months | Free plan 1 month of data access. Growth and above 13 months |
| Billing model | Free. No paid tier | Free, then Growth (priced by monthly sessions), then Pro and Enterprise (custom quote) |
| Data terms worth noting | Microsoft has access to the data and says it does not sell it. Deleting one visitor's data means deleting the project | The free plan is governed by Contentsquare's terms, and features may change at its discretion |

One contradiction is worth flagging. Microsoft's FAQ says Clarity has no sampling and no traffic limits, and the same page says it records up to 100,000 sessions per project per day. Few stores in this revenue band will reach that ceiling. But "no limits" is a marketing line, and the documented cap is the real one.
The checkout row, in detail
This is the row that matters most for a Shopify store, and the one the generic comparisons skip.
Shopify has moved checkout tracking to pixels. On non-Plus plans, the additional scripts section in checkout settings has been view-only since 28 August 2025, and Thank you and Order status page customisations go through blocks and pixels instead (Shopify Help Center, 2026). Pixels run in a sandbox, and Shopify's documentation says that sandbox cannot automatically detect clicks and mouse movement to build heatmaps from the page (Shopify Help Center, 2026).
Microsoft says checkout and post-checkout pages are tracked through Shopify's pixel on Shopify Plus (Microsoft Learn, 2025), and its checkout abandonment report is Plus only (Microsoft Learn, 2026). Contentsquare's app listing claims replays and heatmaps on checkout pages. I could not open the Contentsquare help article that says which plans that applies to, so treat it as unconfirmed until you see it on your own store.
The practical rule: on a non-Plus store, assume your heatmaps and recordings stop where the checkout starts. Read checkout drop-off from Shopify's own reports instead, and use the checkout conversion guide for what to fix there.
When Hotjar (Contentsquare) is worth paying for
You need the why, not only the what. A recording shows a shopper hesitating on your size selector. A one-question survey on that page can tell you they could not find the size chart. Clarity's feature list has no on-site surveys, so you would add a separate tool.
You need recordings older than 30 days. Comparing sessions before and after a redesign over a full quarter outgrows Clarity's 30-day playback window. Contentsquare's Growth plan keeps 13 months of data access.
You are on Shopify Plus and checkout is the question. If your biggest drop-off is inside checkout, confirm Contentsquare's checkout capture on your store during the free period. If it works, that alone can justify a paid plan.
When Clarity is enough: a short review
Most of the decisions I have made from behavioural data were answered by a clickmap, not a survey.
The before/after slider above is one. Another: a small arrow next to a call-to-action's text draws its own click volume. Some shoppers click the arrow and others click the words, so the arrow earns its place. A third: a behavioural report reordered an entire page. Sections people interacted with moved up. Text testimonials were not being read, so proof led with photos instead.
None of those needed surveys or a year of history. They needed a heatmap and somebody asking a specific question of it.
Clarity's real limits, from Microsoft's own documentation:
- Recordings expire after 30 days. Favourite the ones you need, because favourited sessions stay for nine months and individual recordings cannot be downloaded (Microsoft Learn, 2026).
- Elements that open on click are hard to read. The heatmap screenshot does not display clicks on things like menus that open on click (Microsoft Learn, 2026). On most Shopify themes, cart drawers and size-chart popups behave the same way. Microsoft's FAQ says you can still select those elements from its ranked list.
- European traffic needs consent. Since 31 October 2025, Clarity enforces consent signals for the EEA, UK and Switzerland (Microsoft Learn, 2025). Turn on Shopify's cookie banner and Clarity reads it automatically (Microsoft Learn, 2026). Without consent, sessions fragment and full replays disappear for those visitors.
Want someone to read the maps against a documented method? My conversion rate optimization audit runs a store against 78 patterns across 13 surfaces and ranks what to fix first.
The tool won't fix a thin sample or a missing question
Heatmaps need traffic. On a B2B events site, I wanted to settle where the main call to action belonged using heatmap data. The client asked for concrete arguments instead and deferred click-testing to a campaign with more traffic. A heatmap built on a few hundred visits shows you noise in confident colours.
Confirming a heatmap finding with an A/B test? My working rule of thumb is a few hundred conversions per variation, on several thousand sessions. Below that, even large lifts are easy to misread.
Heatmaps show behaviour, not lifetime value. On a subscription store, I argued for showing the one-time purchase option. My evidence was clickmap data showing one-time demand. I lost. The client stayed subscription-first based on their own prior retention work. A clickmap cannot see that.
So write the question down before you open either dashboard. "Why is the product page not converting" is too broad. "Do mobile shoppers reach the reviews before they leave" is a question a heatmap can answer. The conversion rate optimization process shows where that question comes from.
When neither fits: Microsoft Clarity alternatives
Lucky Orange is the usual third option, and the one people mean when they search Lucky Orange vs Hotjar. It is built as a Shopify app. Its listing covers recordings, heatmaps, cart abandonment, checkout drop-off by step, funnels and on-site surveys, with a free plan (Shopify App Store, 2026). The full breakdown is in Lucky Orange for Shopify.
One name to drop from older lists: Smartlook stopped selling new paid plans on 31 May 2026 (Smartlook, 2026). For the wider field, including tools aimed at Shopify stores rather than SaaS products, see Hotjar alternatives.
And sometimes the answer is no tool yet. If a page cannot collect enough sessions in a month to fill a heatmap, your Shopify funnel report and a handful of customer conversations will tell you more. That is where what a conversion rate optimization audit actually covers starts.
FAQ
Can I still sign up for Hotjar?
Not as a new customer. Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare, and Contentsquare's own page says new Hotjar accounts can no longer be created. New users sign up on Contentsquare instead, which has a free plan. If you already have a Hotjar account, you log in with your existing credentials.
Is Microsoft Clarity really free for a Shopify store?
Microsoft says Clarity is free forever with no paid tier and no traffic limits. Its own FAQ also says it records up to 100,000 sessions per project per day, so there is a ceiling, just a high one. You install it through Microsoft's own Shopify app without editing your theme.
Can Clarity or Hotjar record the Shopify checkout?
Assume not on a standard plan. Shopify runs pixels in a sandbox that cannot build heatmaps by reading the page. Microsoft says checkout tracking works through Shopify's pixel on Shopify Plus. Contentsquare's app listing claims checkout replays and heatmaps, but confirm which plan that needs before you rely on it.
Does Microsoft Clarity need cookie consent on Shopify?
For visitors from the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, yes. Microsoft has enforced consent signals for those regions since 31 October 2025. Clarity reads Shopify's own cookie banner once you enable it. Without consent, sessions fragment and full replays are unavailable for those visitors.
How long does Microsoft Clarity keep session recordings?
Thirty days for playback. Heatmap and click data last nine months, and so do recordings you favourite or label. If you review a redesign over a full quarter, favourite the sessions you want to keep inside the first month, because you cannot download individual recordings afterwards.
Lucky Orange vs Hotjar: which suits a Shopify store better?
Lucky Orange is built as a Shopify app, and its listing bundles recordings, heatmaps, checkout drop-off by step and on-site surveys. Hotjar's successor, Contentsquare, offers the same core tools on a plan sized by monthly sessions. Pick on checkout coverage and survey needs for your store, not on feature count.
What to do this week
Install Clarity through Microsoft's app. Turn on Shopify's cookie banner if you sell into Europe. Then write one question about one page, and give the tool a month of traffic before you read the answer.
If you would rather bring the question to someone who has read a lot of these maps, book a call.
