The useful question about Lucky Orange isn't "is it good?" It's "what does it show me that a free tool doesn't, and will anyone on my team look at it?"
On a Shopify store, the honest answer is narrow. Two things set it apart from a free recorder. One is a bundle of extras in one app: live chat, surveys, funnels and form analytics. The other is a vendor-stated ability to record checkout on Shopify Plus. Storefront recordings and heatmaps, a free tool will also show you.
Disclosure: no affiliate links, no sponsorship. I co-founded Skuology and Upsellr, and neither is an analytics tool. For how behaviour tools fit into a Shopify optimization process as a whole, start with the guide to heatmaps and session recordings for Shopify. This post is the Lucky Orange part of it.
Key Takeaways
- Lucky Orange bundles heatmaps, recordings, chat, surveys, funnels and form analytics, billed by monthly sessions.
- On standard Shopify plans, checkout shows up as events, not video, in any behaviour tool.
- Checkout recording on Shopify Plus is a vendor claim. Verify it on your own store during the trial.
- If you wouldn't use chat and surveys weekly, start with Microsoft Clarity, which is free.
- In consent-required markets, your recordings are a sample of visitors who clicked accept.
What Lucky Orange is, as of October 2026
Lucky Orange is a behaviour analytics suite. Its pricing page lists the same features on every plan: Discovery AI, Dynamic Heatmaps, Session Recordings, Surveys and Announcements, Live Chat, Live Visitor View, Conversion Funnels, and Page and Form Analytics (Lucky Orange, 2026).
On the Shopify App Store it's listed as Lucky Orange Heatmaps & Replay. On 16 October 2026 the listing carried the Built for Shopify badge and a 4.6 rating from 898 reviews. It launched on July 8, 2014 (Shopify App Store, 2026).
Billing is session-based. Plans scale by sessions recorded per month, with an annual discount and a 7-day trial on the direct site. The App Store listing shows a free plan and a different ladder of plan names and limits. Compare the plan you'd actually be billed through.
Installing it on Shopify, and the consent catch
You install it from the App Store. The vendor says there's "no tracking code to add, no developer needed" (Lucky Orange, 2026). No snippet pasted into theme.liquid.
The part people skip is consent. In markets configured to require it, usually the EEA and the UK, Shopify runs pixels only for visitors who gave the required permissions (Shopify Help Center, 2026). Lucky Orange's help docs say visitors "need to actively consent to data collection" before it can track them (Lucky Orange Help, 2026).
Two consequences:
- Your banner has to be wired correctly. A third-party cookie banner must connect to Shopify's Customer Privacy API, or Lucky Orange still collects nothing.
- Your recordings are a sample. With heavy European traffic, you're watching the people who clicked accept. They may not behave like the people who didn't.
What it can and cannot see on the Shopify checkout
Shopify loads pixels on the storefront, checkout, thank you page and order status page (Shopify Help Center, 2026). But pixels run in a sandbox. Shopify's developer docs say features that rely on "scraping the DOM for information or attempting to write to the DOM" won't work there (Shopify.dev, 2026). A recording is a copy of the page as it changes. No page access, no recording.
So on a standard plan, behaviour tools see checkout as events, not video. Lucky Orange says it "tracks all events on checkout but you will not be able to see Session Recordings or Heatmaps for the checkout page" (Lucky Orange, 2026). The recording goes blank at that point while the events timeline keeps logging steps (Lucky Orange Help, 2026).
| Surface | Standard Shopify plan | Shopify Plus (per Lucky Orange) |
|---|---|---|
| Storefront pages | Recordings, heatmaps, events | Recordings, heatmaps, events |
| Checkout | Events only (started, contact, shipping, payment, ordered) | Recordings and heatmaps (vendor claim) |
| Thank you and order status | Pixels load here (Shopify) | Pixels load here (Shopify) |
On Plus, Lucky Orange calls itself "the only behavioral analytics tool that supports session recordings and heatmaps on Shopify Plus's hosted checkout pages" (Lucky Orange, 2026). Treat "only" carefully. Microsoft's docs say Plus checkout and post-checkout pages "are now tracked in Clarity through Shopify's Pixel" (Microsoft Learn, 2025). They don't say whether "tracked" means replays or events.
I couldn't find a shopify.dev or help.shopify.com page documenting the Plus exception Lucky Orange describes, so I won't assert it either way. If checkout replay is why you're buying, confirm it on your own checkout with a test order before the trial ends.
On a standard plan, step-by-step checkout drop-off still tells you where to look. The Shopify checkout conversion guide covers what to do with it.
Lucky Orange vs Microsoft Clarity vs Hotjar on a Shopify store
| Lucky Orange | Microsoft Clarity | Contentsquare (formerly Hotjar) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Billing model | Paid tiers by monthly sessions; free plan on the App Store | "Free forever", "No limits on traffic" (Clarity, 2026) | New Hotjar accounts can no longer be created; new users sign up to Contentsquare, which has session-based tiers and a free plan (Contentsquare, 2026) |
| Shopify install | App Store app | App Store app | Not verified here |
| Standard-plan checkout | Events, no replay | No replay (pixel sandbox) | No replay (pixel sandbox) |
| Plus checkout | Recordings and heatmaps (vendor claim) | "Tracked" via Shopify's Pixel (Microsoft) | Not verified here |
| Live chat | Yes | Not listed | Not listed |
| On-site surveys | Yes | Not listed | Yes, listed by Contentsquare |
Checked on 16 October 2026: the Clarity app showed "Free" and a 4.6 rating from 2,372 reviews on the Shopify App Store (Shopify App Store, 2026). And hotjar.com/pricing now redirects to contentsquare.com/pricing. Contentsquare also says it's "no longer possible to create a new account on Hotjar"; new users sign up to Contentsquare instead (Contentsquare, 2026).
Clarity versus Hotjar is its own decision, covered in Microsoft Clarity vs Hotjar. If you've already ruled Hotjar out, the wider field is in Hotjar alternatives.
My read: Clarity gives you recordings and heatmaps for nothing. Lucky Orange charges for the extras around them, which pays off only if they replace a tool you'd buy anyway.
Who should pay for Lucky Orange, and who shouldn't
Pay for it if:
- You're on Plus and checkout is your open question. If the trial confirms checkout replay, that's a view a free tool may not give you.
- You want chat, surveys and recordings in one place. Seeing the session of a visitor who just asked a question in chat is useful context.
- Someone owns it weekly. A named person who reviews recordings and writes up what they saw. Without that, any tool is a cost line.
Don't pay for it if:
- Your traffic is thin. I once wanted to settle an above-the-fold CTA argument for a B2B events client with heatmap data. The client deferred click-testing to a higher-traffic campaign. A low-traffic heatmap shows too few people to read reliably, and session billing means paying for noise.
- You already run a help desk and a survey tool. The bundle duplicates them, and Clarity covers the rest.
- Your real question is lifetime value. Heatmaps show what people do on a page, not what they're worth over a year. More on that below.
If you're unsure what your store's real bottleneck is, a tool won't tell you. That's what a conversion rate optimization audit is for: deciding which questions are worth instrumenting before you pay to instrument them.
How to get value from it in the first two weeks
Most behaviour tools get installed, collect months of recordings, and never get opened. Two deliberate weeks tell you whether the subscription earns its place.
Days 1 to 3: prove the data is clean. Place a test order and check every checkout event appears in the timeline. Test your consent banner from an EU connection. Tracking comes before judgment. On a sea-moss brand, the redesign shipped while tracking was poor and revenue kept sliding. Only later did the data show add-to-cart clicks had risen, with too little clean traffic to measure it properly.
Days 4 to 9: read three pages, not thirty. Pick your best-selling product page, the cart and one collection. On the clickmaps, find the most-clicked element that isn't a button. On a skincare product page, a before/after slider was the single most-clicked element, and people clicked through every slide. That justified building the arrows carousel the designer didn't want.
Arrows on buttons draw their own clicks too: "A lot of people click the arrow when it's there and others click the text." The Shopify product page optimization guide covers what to do once you know which elements earn attention.
Days 10 to 14: watch the people who almost bought. Filter recordings to visitors who added to cart and didn't order, and run one short survey on the cart. On one client store, a behavioural report showed text testimonials weren't really being read. The page was reordered to lead with proof that had photos. That's the kind of finding to look for: a reason to move something.
Day 14: keep it or cancel it. Ask one question of the two weeks: did Lucky Orange show you something Microsoft Clarity, which is free, could not? Check the extras Clarity doesn't list: on-site surveys, live chat, and checkout drop-off by step, which Clarity only reports on Shopify Plus. If none of them changed what you plan to test, stay on the free plan or remove the app and keep Clarity. If one did, write down which, because that is what you are paying for every month.
Two weeks should produce a short list of hypotheses, not a list of changes. Anything that moves revenue goes through a test. My working rule for a reliable result is a few hundred conversions per variation, on several thousand sessions.
What heatmaps can't tell you
A heatmap is behaviour on a page. It isn't a business case.
Clickmaps can make a strong case. On a subscription store, they showed a collapsed one-time purchase option still getting heavy clicks, with subscription the only preselected choice. Latent one-time demand exists even when you hide it.
I once argued, with clickmap evidence, that a subscription-first client should show its one-time option. The client stayed subscription-first, based on retention work they'd already done. I lost that argument and recorded it as a loss.
They weren't ignoring the data. They were weighing it against something no heatmap can show: what a customer is worth after the first order. Every tool in this category, Lucky Orange included, shows where attention goes. Margin and lifetime value live elsewhere.
The tool is the smallest part of the job. Deciding what to watch is covered in what a conversion rate optimization audit actually covers.
Frequently asked questions
Does Lucky Orange record the Shopify checkout?
Only on Shopify Plus, according to Lucky Orange. On standard plans it receives checkout events such as checkout started, shipping submitted and ordered, but the recording goes blank at checkout. Shopify sandboxes pixels on checkout so they cannot read the page, which is why behaviour tools cannot show standard-plan checkout as video.
Is Lucky Orange better than Microsoft Clarity for Shopify?
It does more, but more is not automatically better. Clarity is free with no traffic limits and covers recordings and heatmaps. Lucky Orange adds live chat, surveys, funnels and form analytics in one app, billed by sessions. If you would not use those extras every week, Clarity is the better starting point.
How do I install Lucky Orange on Shopify?
Install it from the Shopify App Store. Lucky Orange says no tracking code or developer is needed. Before you trust the data, check your cookie banner. In markets that require consent, Lucky Orange only tracks visitors who accept, and third-party banners must connect to Shopify's Customer Privacy API.
Is Lucky Orange free on Shopify?
The App Store listing shows a free plan, capped by monthly sessions, and paid plans that scale by sessions. The plan ladder on the App Store differs from the one on Lucky Orange's own website, so compare the plan you would actually be billed through. Prices change, so check the live listing.
What are the best Lucky Orange alternatives?
For most Shopify stores, Microsoft Clarity is the first alternative to test because it is free and installs as a Shopify app. Hotjar no longer accepts new accounts; new users sign up to Contentsquare, which absorbed it and offers its own free plan. The real question is which extras you would use, not which tool has the longest feature list.
How much traffic do I need before heatmaps are useful?
Enough that one page collects a few thousand sessions in the period you are reviewing. Below that, a heatmap shows a handful of people and invites confident conclusions from noise. My working rule for a reliable A/B test is a few hundred conversions per variation, on several thousand sessions.
The next step
No tool tells you which page costs you the most. It only shows what happens on the pages you choose to watch.
If you'd rather start with that decision than a subscription, book a call. Bring your checkout funnel numbers and I'll help you work out which questions to answer first.
